Aubade at Montpellier

In "Aubade"
with Renée Jeanmaire
(1946)

This ballet was created by Serge Lifar, with music by Francis Poulenc, specially for Skouratoff and Renee Jeanmaire, at Monte-Carlo in 1946. It had before two choreographic versions, by Bronislawa Nijinska in 1929 and by Georges Balanchine in 1930. With decors by Constantin Nepo, Lifar’s new version was also based, as Balanchine’s, on the mythological legend of Diana and Acteon.

That which gives this work its absolute singularity is the fact that 60 years after its creation, on April 2006, Wladimir Skouratoff was requested by the Great Opera Theatre of Kiev, Lifar’s born city, to make its reposition for the Ukrainian stage.

At this very moment, Aubade makes again an important choreographic event, ever since Skouratoff makes its reprise – this time at Montpellier – on October 27th 2007, at the Théâtre de la Comédie.
